Dolly Parton had an antiquated way of reaching out to Miley Cyrus.

In a PEOPLE first look of the "Midnight Sky" singer's appearance on The Graham Norton Show, she reveals that her godmother Parton sent her a fax asking to collaborate on her holiday album.

"So Dolly Parton, she called you?" asks Norton, 57.

"She faxed me," replies Cyrus, 27, adding that she herself doesn't even own a fax machine.

"She gets upset when you don't respond," she says about the 74-year-old country legend. "And it's like, I'm sorry, I don't even know. Half the people watching your show might not even know what a fax machine is."

Cyrus tells Norton that her dad Billy Ray Cyrus owns an old machine to accept faxes, adding that he also has two Blackberry phones from 2005.

"Christmas on the Square will bring the JOY the world needs right now," said director Debbie Allen of the movie, which debuts on Nov. 22

"He says two Blackberries equal an iPhone, which is not true," Cyrus says. "But he's also one of those."

Cyrus joined Parton on A Holly Dolly Christmas album for the track "Christmas Is."

"Dolly reached out about doing a Christmas record with her and only for Dolly Parton do you sing a Christmas carol in July," she says. "But she makes physical records and so she had to get it turned in. I was singing about Christmas in the middle of L.A. summer, and only for Dolly."

It's a busy holiday season for Parton. Last month, she announced a collection with Williams Sonoma inspired by her Christmas tradition and a Netflix musical called Christmas on the Square.

Parton dropped her 12-track holiday album featuring additional collaborations with Jimmy Fallon, Michael Bublé and Willie Nelson earlier this month.
