At the beginning of March, former The Voice contestant Janice Freeman died at the age of 33 after an apparent blood clot. Freeman was on “Team Miley” during her time on The Voice, and the two stayed close after the show ended–and Miley heavily mourned the loss of her friend on social media.

Cyrus attended the Celebration of Life for Freeman on Monday (Mar. 18) at Mariners Church in Irvine, where she broke down in tears while introducing her performance. “I was never her coach, ever. She was always mine.”

“I’ve learned more from her than anyone that I’ve ever gotten the honor to be in the room with, not just vocally, I should’ve gotten more lessons than I did, but she taught me everything that I know about love,” she continued. “And, to be here, and I had planned on singing a song for her, but just losing her is just too much for me. So … my dad’s gonna take care of this for me. But, I’ll always be your sister, I’m here for you, and I’m here for your family, and Janice I’ll miss you more than I could ever say.”

She then turned the stage over to her father Billy Ray Cyrus, who led the crowd with a powerful version of “Amazing Grace,” with harmonies from Miley throughout. Watch it via TMZ here.
