Miley Cyrus has premiered her new single called “Used to Be Young,” along with an accompanying video. Watch it below.

“This song is about honoring who we’ve been, loving who we are, and celebrating who we will become,” Cyrus said in a statement. “I feel proud when reflecting on my past and optimistic when thinking about the future. I am grateful to my loyal fans who make my dreams a reality daily. I am sincerely thankful for the stability of your steadfast support. This song is for you.”

Cyrus has been teasing the new song for a while now, hinting at its lyrics in a May 2023 profile with British Vogue: “I know I used to be crazy/ I know I used to be fun/ You say I used to be wild/ I say I used to be young.” She explained in the interview that those lines came to her after another songwriter approached her with a “standard fucked up in the club track,” a theme she no longer relates to now that she’s two years sober.

Fans then caught on that the release “Used to Be Young” was imminent when promotional posters began popping up in cities like Brussels earlier this week. The posters featured images of Cyrus along with some of her old immediately-recognizable lyrics in block text, like “I hopped off the plane at LAX” and “I came in like a wrecking ball”; then, in another box, “I say I used to be young.”

On Wednesday (August 23rd), Cyrus shared an Instagram post with handwritten lyrics to “Used to Be Young,” which includes some pointed lines like: “It’s not worth cryin’ about/ The things you can’t erase/ Like tattoos and regrets/ Words I never meant/ And ones that got away.” She explained more of the song’s backstory in the caption, writing: “These lyrics were written almost 2 years ago… at a time I felt misunderstood. I have spent the last 18 months painting a sonic picture of my perspective to share with you. The time has arrived to release a song that I could perfect forever. Although my work is done, this song will continue to write itself everyday. The fact it remains unfinished is a part of its beauty. That is my life at this moment ….. unfinished yet complete.”

“Used to Be Young” arrives along with a video, featuring a “super emotional” Cyrus singing directly into the camera. In a statement, she explained that she was actually getting to sing the song directly to her mother. “I could see her inside of the camera by using a technology where I could livestream with my mom from inside of the camera,” she explained. “So, we could see each other and as she was dancing — it just made me cry, it made me laugh, it brought up so many real emotions, and I think it’s really letting people into true emotion, which I don’t feel we get to see very much these days.”

Fans can also see a more reflective side of Cyrus via the new TV special event Endless Summer Vacation: Continued (Backyard Sessions), which is streaming now on Hulu. It’s a re-imagining of the version that originally aired on Disney+ back in March, complete with a brand-new interview.

Pre-orders for a limited 7-inch vinyl of “Used to Be Young” are ongoing. See Cyrus’ announcement post for the new single below.

“Used to Be Young” is Cyrus’ first new music since her March album Endless Summer Vacationwhich features the record-breaking hit “Flowers.”
