Mike's Crumb Cake Factory closing in Ocean Township; Brick remains open

Mike's Crumb Cake Factory in Ocean Township, the second location of a popular bakery known for its many varieties of crumb cake and its contributions to local school fundraisers, will close this weekend.

Mike Gingrich opened the bakery in Ocean Township's Cobblestone Village in 2020, less than a year after opening the original Mike's Crumb Cake Factory in Brick.

The Monmouth County location's last day is Aug. 28. The Brick store will remain open, and Gingrich is planning to build a large production facility in Monmouth County within the next few years.

He said the rising cost of ingredients played a big part in the decision to close his second store.

"Prices on everything have more than tripled, and you're lucky if you can even get the things you need to make your products," he said. "Two years ago, a bag of flour was $5. Now it's $15, and that's just one example.

"Every week is like an Easter egg hunt trying to go through your suppliers to acquire all the things you need to run your business, from aluminum pans to plastic lids to white boxes to butter and sugar and so on," he said. "It's just getting to be too much."

Gingrich's crumb cake recipe comes from his mother, who sold the cake at her Brick business, Sand Dollar Deli. It closed in 2012, and "I took the crumb cake and kept it going," he told The Asbury Park Press in 2020.

That year, Gingrich brought the cake to a food and wine festival in Atlantic City.

"Ten thousand people tried the crumb cake, and I knew by their response that down the road, I was going to open this store. I knew it was going to be something catchy," he said. "Everyone thought I was crazy: 'You're just going to sell crumb cake?' But everybody loves it."

Gingrich said he is is grateful for his Monmouth County customers, who will be able to purchase his crumb cake at Monmouth Clubhouse Deli in Cobblestone Village.

"Closing that location will give me more time to devote to my Brick store, which means I can do more fundraisers for the kids, more donations, and start drawing up plans for a new location," he said.
