Mike Trout's quarantine features no hitting but lots of Yahtzee

Angels outfielder and 3 time MVP Mike Trout calls Yahoo Sports' Mike Oz to discuss what he's been up to during quarantine and what fans might expect from a shortened 2020 season.

Video Transcript

MIKE OZ: What is-- what has life been like for you during all this? And now we're coming up on two months of it now, right? So how have you sort of adjusted just your daily, you know, regular human being life?

MIKE TROUT: It kind of-- it kind of varies. Played a lot of-- I tell you what, I played a lot of board games in the last, you know, 45 days with my wife-- a lot more than I played in my whole life, so. We-- my wife and I, we planted a garden. You know, I would never have a time for a garden. It's pretty-- pretty unique, you can do stuff that you weren't able to do in your daily routines in your life. I've enjoyed it so far.

MIKE OZ: Hold on, I want to talk about workout stuff with you. But first, I want to know what board games you play and what board games you're good at.

MIKE TROUT: Monopoly, I've got my wife a couple of times in the last few nights. Yahtzee, she's got me every time. Rummikub.

MIKE OZ: Ooh, that's my game, man. I love that game. Yeah, I love that game.

MIKE TROUT: Yeah, Rummikub's a good one. She's-- she was a teacher, so she's pretty smart. It's a toss-up in that game.

MIKE OZ: All right, so what are the workouts like? With baseball, I mean, as you know, I mean, so routine-oriented, how do you do that on your own?

MIKE TROUT: You know, I think it's just putting your mind to it. Only yourself can tell you to do something and for you to do it. Monday is upper, Tuesday's lower, off day, Wednesday. And then I do it again, Thursday, Friday-- upper, lower. And then, I haven't really been hitting yet. I've been throwing.

MIKE OZ: Do you just play catch with, like, family? Have you had to find people? Like, how does that work?

MIKE TROUT: Whoever's around the area. You know, I got a couple of guys that can meet me at a, like, a Little League field down the road, which is pretty cool, cause you can-- you know, it brings back the old times of going to a Little League game or a Little League field.

MIKE OZ: Do people-- when people see you, like, playing, you know, playing at the school field, like, do they-- do they stop you and be like, oh, there's Mike Trout--

MIKE TROUT: Oh, yeah.

MIKE OZ: --or, I mean, are they so used to you being around and about?

MIKE TROUT: It's basically, you know, they see me, the word gets out, and the next thing you know, I got a couple of Trout jerseys walking down the road. You know, they come up and say hello, you know, which is cool. I think interacting-- you know, obviously staying six feet away, the distance, cause I got a pregnant wife, so I'm trying to be real cautious about that. But seeing people, seeing kids, seeing their reactions. You know, after maybe playing catch with the ball, you know, signing the ball for them, giving it to them, just stuff like that.

MIKE OZ: So when we get back to baseball, I mean, we know it's not gonna be what it was, right? Like, you know, regardless, it's gonna take a while. You know, I'm sure you've seen some of this stuff too. They're talking, you know, no high fives, no spitting, like, six feet between the lockers, and all this stuff. And we know, obviously, it could all change. But is that gonna feel like baseball or is that gonna feel weird?

MIKE TROUT: Oh, it's definitely gonna feel weird. [LAUGHS] But I think, yeah, any baseball is better than no baseball. So definitely gonna be different. It's gonna be a challenge for all of us.

You know, cause you got a responsibility-- you have a responsibility for others. You gotta prepare yourself to do all these things cause if you don't and the virus gets in that clubhouse, it's not gonna be a good situation. So I think, you know, everybody has a responsibility. Hopefully, everything works out.
