Mike Hagerty Dies: ‘Friends’ & ‘Somebody Somewhere’ Actor Was 67

Mike Hagerty, best known for his roles on Somebody Somewhere, as the building super Mr. Treeger on Friends and as the surly owner of a used-clothing store on Seinfeld, has died. His death April 29 was confirmed by Bridget Everett, who plays his daughter on the HBO comedy. No cause was given. He was 67.

“With great sadness, the family of Michael G. Hagerty announced his death yesterday in Los Angeles,” wrote Everett on Instagram. “A beloved character actor, his love of his hometown of Chicago and his family were the cornerstones of his life. … He will be sorely missed.”

Born on May 10, 1954, in Chicago, Hagerty began his career with bit parts in such mid-1980s films as Doctor Detroit, Brewster’s Millions, Nothing in Common, One More Saturday Night, Overboard and Red Heat and had a role in a 1986 episode of Cheers.

He also appeared in the early-’90s films Dick Tracy, V.I. Warshawski and Wayne’s World — the latter being his first film with Mike Myers. Hagerty would go on to appear in the SNL alum’s So I Married an Axe Murderer and Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me.

By the 1990s, Hagerty was a familiar and prolific TV guest star, appearing in Married… with Children, Murphy Brown, Dear John, American Dreamer, The Wonder Years, Civil Wars, Martin, The Building, Star Trek: The Next Generation, The Wayans Bros., Sisters, The Drew Carey Show, Arli$$, Union Square, ER and Deadwood.

He landed his first series-regular role in 1993, opposite Bonnie Hunt in the short-lived CBS sitcom The Building, executive produced by David Letterman. The series only lasted a handful of episodes.

He then was cast as a regular on Fox’s The George Carlin Show, which aired from January 1994-September 1995.

He also had a memorable role on Seinfeld in the classic 1994 episode “The Raincoats.” Hagerty played Rudy, owner of a downtown vintage clothing store (New Yorkers got the joke: Rudy’s Antique Boutique was a real-life second-hand shop, beloved by hipsters and NYU students of the ’80s and ’90s) who purchased some old cabana-wear of Jerry Stiller’s Frank Costanza, not knowing it was moth-ridden. When Michael Richards’ Kramer and Barney Martin’s Morty Seinfeld tried to sell him some old beltless raincoats (“The Executive” model) to Rudy, he declined, citing the buggy cabana clothes (which he set ablaze).

Hagerty entered the zeitgeist when he was cast to recur as the building super Mr. Treeger on the NBC juggernaut comedy Friends in 1995. He was introduced in the 1995 episode “The One Where Heckles Dies” and later threatened to have Rachel and Monica (Courteney Cox and Jennifer Aniston) evicted over illegal subletting and got Joey (Matt LeBlanc) to teach him how to dance. Treeger is the last character mentioned on the series, when Monica told Chandler (Matthew Perry) in the 2004 final scene, “I almost forgot – I promised Treeger that we’d leave our key.”

In 2013, he joined the cast of Brooklyn Nine-Nine as Captain McGinley. And in 2022, he joined Everett in her breakout HBO comedy Somebody Somewhere as patriarch Ed Miller.

HBO said in a statement: “We are very saddened to hear about the sudden passing of Mike Hagerty. A member of the HBO family for many years, his most recent role as Bridget Everett’s father in Somebody Somewhere showed his special talent for bringing heart to a performance. Mike was a joy to work with and brought warmth and kindness to all who knew him. We send our deepest condolences to his family and friends.”

Hagerty is survived by his wife Mary Kathryn; his sister, Mary Ann Hagerty; her wife, Kathleen O’Rourke; and their daughter Meg.
