Horror maestro Mike Flanagan is being eyed to direct the next Exorcist film.

The news comes in a report from Deadline, which writes, “should a deal [be made], Flanagan would take over the reins from David Gordon Green, who exited the rebooted franchise back in January.”

Flanagan is best-known for horror series The Haunting of Hill House, as well as Midnight Mass and Doctor Sleep.

The news comes after the last Exorcist film from Blumhouse and Universal Pictures underperformed critically. The Exorcist: Believer flopped on Rotten Tomatoes, managing just 22%.

It was, however, a huge success at the box office, grossing approximately $136m worldwide against a reported $30m budget.

There are more movies in The Exorcist to come. Universal and Blumhouse bought rights to The Exorcist in July 2021 for $400M, with plans to make at least three films. With one film down, it’s not clear at this point if Flanagan is going to sign on for one or two.

The next film in the series is called The Exorcist: Deceiver, which is predicted to release some time in 2025.
