Norwegian skier Aleksander Aamodt Kilde is in good hands after suffering from a “brutal” crash.

Kilde, 31, was competing in a World Cup downhill race in Wengen, Switzerland on Saturday when he fell near the bottom of the run and crashed into the sideline. He was airlifted from the scene via a medical helicopter, Reuters reported, and taken to a hospital in the nearby city of Bern.

On Saturday night, he was treated for his injuries, which included a dislocated shoulder and a cut in his calf, according to an update shared on Instagram by his team. “He has no fractures, but is bruised. Kilde is in good hands at the hospital in Bern, says the team’s doctor Marc Jacob Strauss.”

The skier later offered an update in his own words as he posted two selfies with his girlfriend and fellow professional skier Mikaela Shiffrin. Kilde was shirtless in a hospital bed with cuts on his nose and chin in the selfie, while Shiffrin, 28, smiled beside him. In a second shot, she kissed him on the forehead.

“I’m here (and being taken care of by the one and only @mikaelashiffrin ❤️‍),” he wrote in the caption, adding that he’s “patched up.”

Kilde continued, “Thank you so much for all of the messages. I’m grateful for all the words of love and support. This sport can be brutal, but I still love it. 🙏🏻.”

Reuters reported that the Olympic athlete is out for the rest of the season, according to his team doctor, Strauss, who shared the news with a Norwegian broadcaster.

"The season is over, the ski season is over. Now we're aiming for that he'll be ready for the next season,” Strauss said.

Kilde’s season-ending injury comes just weeks after he earned his first podium position in a giant slalom competition at a World Cup competition in Adelboden, Switzerland. He shared the achievement on Instagram as he revealed that he was “a little speechless” after the win.

“It’s always such a pleasure to compete in front of this crowd, and to earn my first GS podium at such a classic and legendary venue like the Chuenisbärgli is an absolute dream.

Shiffrin celebrated her man’s success, too, as she shared a video of him celebrating the win on the TV, writing, “@akilde JUST GOT HIS FIRST GS PODIUM EVER WITH AMAZING skiing and I’m actually crying.”

She continued, “wowowowowowow what a King!👑.”

The couple have been together since early 2021, and Kilde told Ski Racing that they are each other’s biggest supporters.

“I love to be around her and experience her type of focus and also her as a human being,” Kilde says. “That combination is scarce, and for me to experience that is something special.”

He continued, “I’m going to do everything I can to have that feeling for the rest of my life. I have to deliver as well, and right now, what we have together is beautiful.”
