From ‘Migration’ to ‘The Beekeeper,’ VOD Charts Suggest Viewers Are Willing to Wait for Lower Rental Prices
One Christmas Warner Bros. release replaced another this week with “Wonka” taking over as #1 from “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” on all VOD charts. However, other late-year releases including “Migration,” “Wish,” and “The Marvels” aren’t having the same luck. While theatrical is the premium marketing tool for home viewing, we’re seeing that it doesn’t always translate to chart placement.
Universal’s “Migration” ($100 million in theaters, in its second week at home) is weaker than past animated releases, currently #4 at Vudu (which tallies by revenue). Disney’s “Wish,” also in week two, placed only on two charts. In its third week, “The Marvels” only placed on Vudu and is #20 at Apple TV. “Ferrari” (Neon) and “The Color Purple” (Warner Bros.) are gone after one week. “The Boys in the Boat” (Amazon MGM) managed just one week on the charts.

“The Beekeeper” (Amazon MGM), which is still performing well in theaters (#3 this weekend), is available at home after 18 days. Action titles usually get elevated interest, but this one is no better than third on the charts (fourth on Google Play).
With less-than-blockbuster films seeing a similar a response at home, it suggests that consumers might be getting more sophisticated in their PVOD consumption. They may be waiting for rental cost to drop to $5.99 (or $19.99 including digital download — of particular interest for parents whose kids want repeat showings). If that were the case, studios might face a drop in revenue.
“Oppenheimer” (Universal) continues to score high on the transaction-counting sites. After a strong $19.99 deput, it remains #2 at both Apple TV and Google Play at $5.99. Making all three charts are “Wonka,” “The Beekeeper,” “Aquaman,” “Napoleon,” “Migration,” and “Trolls World Tour.” Among Oscar contenders, “Anatomy of a Fall” (Neon) and “The Holdovers” (Focus) are faring best in gaining additional viewers.
Netflix’s top 10 movies are led by Columbia Pictures’ 2012 romantic drama “The Vow” with Rachel McAdams and Channing Tatum, ahead of Valentine’s Day. It bests the animated “Orion and the Dark” and the musical documentary “The Greatest Night in Pop,” both original films receiving good reviews and with general-audience appeal.
Netflix’s studio-release dominated chart gave “Orion and the Dark” one day at #9, while “Greatest Night” got as high as #2 last week. The question is whether they will sustain longer play. Meantime, theatrical obscurities like “The Postcard Killings” (2020) and Briarcliff Entertainment’s “The Hill” (2023) both had multiple days at #1.
