Mick Jagger Says The Rolling Stones May Donate Their Back Catalog to Charity

The music industry’s biggest artists can earn a good chunk of change these days by selling the rights to their musical catalogs, but Mick Jagger isn’t so sure that The Rolling Stones will be the next band to cash out. In fact, they might donate the money from their extensive discography to charity instead.

The Rolling Stones are as much of a brand as a rock ‘n’ roll band, and fans know Jagger has maintained a strong hand in the group’s business dealings. Take his interview with The Wall Street Journal Magazine — where he discussed selling the copyrights to the band’s music — as proof. Still, he scoffed at the idea of a sale, quipping, “the children don’t need $500 million to live well. Come on.” Approving the suggestion that the money could go to charity instead of his estate, Jagger added, “You maybe do some good in the world.”

Jagger didn’t get that $500 million figure from nowhere. Sting took home $300 million for his catalog, while Michael Jackson’s estate is working to earn around $900 million for their stake in the late artist’s discography. Katy Perry and Bob Dylan are among the names of other artists who have said goodbye to the their music’s copyrights for a payout.

To be clear, The Rolling Stones only own the music they released after 1971; their former accountant Allen Klein wrangled ownership of the band’s early songs, including hits like “Satisfaction” and “Paint It, Black.” That bum deal is what inspired Jagger to whip the band into shape, so to speak, and polish a live show that continues to draw thousands of fans into stadiums and arenas as the artists tour into their 80s. It’s also why the band’s tongue logo has become one of history’s most famous pieces of iconography; Taylor Swift wasn’t the first artist to get burned by the music industry!
