Michelle Obama Wins Second Grammy, Matching Barack Obama

Michelle Obama has earned her second Grammy Award, now matching husband Barack Obama.

Michelle Obama won best audiobook, narration and storytelling for The Light We Carry: Overcoming In Uncertain Times on Sunday, beating out Meryl Streep, Senator Bernie Sanders, William Shatner and Rick Rubin. The win occurred during the 2024 Grammys pre-show, where most of the awards are handed out. Michelle Obama wasn’t in attendance.

The former first lady won her first Grammy in the same category for her memoir Becoming. Barack Obama won his Grammys for best spoken word album with Dreams from My Father and The Audacity of Hope: Thoughts on Reclaiming the American Dream.

Last year, both Obamas earned Emmy nominations: Michelle Obama received her first Emmy nomination alongside Oprah Winfrey for the best hosted nonfiction series or special for The Light We Carry: Overcoming In Uncertain Times, while the former U.S. President received his second Emmy nomination for his role as the narrator in the Netflix docuseries Working: What We Do All Day.

Trevor Noah is hosting the 2024 Grammys and performers include SZA, Billie Eilish, Dua Lipa, Olivia Rodrigo, Joni Mitchell, U2, Billy Joel, Luke Combs, Burna Boy and Travis Scott. Streep, Lionel Richie, Christina Aguilera, Maluma, Mark Ronson, Taylor Tomlinson and Samara Joy will present awards.

SZA is the top contender with nine nominations, and Victoria Monét and Bridgers follow with seven nominations, while Taylor Swift, Eilish and Rodrigo earned six nominations apiece. Female acts dominate this year and count for all of the nominees in the top three categories apart from Jon Batiste. Album of the year contenders are SOS, Swift’s Midnights, Rodrigo’s Guts, Batiste’s World Music Radio, Miley Cyrus’ Endless Summer Vacation, boygenius’ the record, Lana Del Rey’s Did You Know That There’s a Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd and Janelle Monáe’s The Age of Pleasure.
