Michelle Obama Tells Jimmy Fallon Her Thought While Boarding Air Force One On Trump Inauguration Day: “Bye, Felicia”
The Tonight Show’s Jimmy Fallon hosted book-touring former First Lady Michelle Obama on Tuesday, showing a photo of her with President Barack Obama on Donald Trump’s inauguration day, waiving from Air Force One, asking what had been on her mind at that moment.
“Bye, Felicia,” Michelle responded, speaking volumes and reducing Fallon to giggles.
“A lot was going on that day,” added Obama, who was making her first visit to Fallon’s show while promoting her book, Becoming.
By “a lot,” she means her daughters decided to throw a sleepover on their final night in the White House.
“And then there was the Tiffany’s box,” she added, in re that large gift box from the upscale store that Melania Trump handed her outside the north portico of the White House on January 20, 2017, leaving her stuck holding it for the official White House transition photo. Until the outgoing POTUS took command of the situation and the box, holding up the photo while he walked it inside the house.
“It was a lot,” she told Fallon.
Speaking of the Trumps, the host asked the former First Lady if she is optimistic about the country these days.
“I am,” she insisted. “We owe young people that optimism, that hope, because what’s the alternative?” … They come into this world with so much promise and openness; we’re the ones that shut them down.
‘They need to know their story can be my story,” Obama comtinued. “If you live like I did – a little working-class kid who made her way up to becoming First Lady of the United States, a best-selling author, traveling the world – there is reason for hope,” she said.
“There are dark days in so many of our journeys, but we have to push that arc toward hope. That is what I try to do every day.”
Penning a memoir, she explained, is part of the First Lady “assignment”: “And then, you write a book,” she joked.
“It’s a great story!” Fallon gushed. “You came from basically nothing, and became the First Lady of the United States!”
“Go figure,” she responded modestly, adding she could have written another, on her White House years, but it would have run 800 pages and “it would take Barack like 800 days to read it.”
