Michelle Obama books hourlong 'Today' special for International Day of the Girl announcement

The former first lady has big plans for International Day of the Girl on Oct. 11. Michelle Obama will sit down with Today’s Savannah Guthrie and Hoda Kotb to announce her new plans to promote girls’ education worldwide in an hour-long TV special.

Obama appears to be teaming up with Jenna Bush Hager, the Today correspondent and daughter of former President George W. Bush, who is launching a series on global adolescent girls’ education the same day, according to an NBC News press release. The International Day of the Girl event will feature live performances by female artists including Kelly Clarkson, Jennifer Hudson, and Meghan Trainor.

The former first lady hasn’t announced the appearance on her personal social media accounts yet, but increasing girls’ education was one of her main agendas in the White House — an agenda she’s continued since moving out of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

“While times may have changed and I may no longer live in the White House, I have no intention of walking away from these girls,” she said in a video for the 2017 Global Citizen Festival. “I plan to keep on working on this issue for the rest of my life.”

Meanwhile, Obama supporters are buzzing about what the news could be.

Hager has interviewed Obama in the past, which gave viewers the rare perspective of two women who have lived in the White House with presidents from different political parties. But working together on an issue they’re both passionate about would take their relationship to a new level.

And let’s not forget Obama’s recent bonding session with Bush Hager’s parents.
