Singer Michelle Branch and her husband, Black Keys drummer Patrick Carney, have decided to work on their marriage after she filed for divorce in August.

The "Everywhere" singer, 39, appeared on "Tamron Hall" pn Thursday and discussed the spiral that led to her divorce filing, the allegations that Carney was unfaithful and her arrest Aug. 11 on a charge of assaulting her husband.

"My husband and I have started therapy recently, and I wish that we had started it six months ago. I wish that we had gotten help and talked to someone sooner," Branch said. "It's made such a huge difference in such a short amount of time."

She went on to call the night of the altercation with Carney, 42, "so unfortunate." Branch was arrested on a misdemeanor assault charge and released after paying $1,000 bail. According to court documents, her 12-hour hold was modified because she was breastfeeding her infant.

The case was later dismissed at the "request of the state," online court records showed. The reason for the dropped charge is listed as "settlement."

When she was arrested, Branch told Metro Nashville Police Department officers she and her husband were "having marital problems" and said she slapped Carney in the face once or twice during an argument, according to the arrest affidavit.

"It was the worst night of my life. And then to have it out in the world as I'm about to put out a record has been a lot, but all I can do is just be honest about what I'm going through and what's going on. I'm not the first person to have gone through this," Branch told host Tamron Hall.

She also noted that reports of her assaulting her husband are "not allegations." She added, "I don't condone violence. I slapped my husband. Not the finest moment of my life.

"I'm only seven months postpartum from having a baby. Every parent in the audience knows this – sleep stress, life stress, marriage stress, work stress. Also, we had been out at a birthday party that night – I'd had a few drinks – all the blocks were stacked in a way that I didn't have time to think about really what I was doing. And it was one of those things that I was like: 'Is this really happening? Did this really just happen?'"

The singer/songwriter said she regretted tweeting about Carney's alleged infidelity. "I definitely shouldn't have let my anger get the best of me," she said.

"It's unfortunate that it took this horrible, traumatic event to hopefully (move forward). My husband and I are like: 'How we were going was unsustainable. Maybe this will give us the tools to have a stronger marriage than we've ever had,'" Branch said. "We're rolling up our sleeves and doing the work, which never sounds like fun, but we're doing it."

Police arrested Branch the same day the singer confirmed to USA TODAY that she had split from Carney. The “Breathe” singer married the rock drummer in April 2019. They share two children, one of whom is an infant.

"To say that I am totally devastated doesn't even come close to describing how I feel for myself and for my family. The rug has been completely pulled from underneath me and now I must figure out how to move forward," Branch wrote in a statement released to USA TODAY on Aug. 11. "With such small children, I ask for privacy and kindness."
