Michel Gondry Directs IDLES’ New “Model Village” Video: Watch

Bristol’s IDLES have shared an animated music video for a new song called “Model Village.” It was co-directed by Michel Gondry, the French director behind Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, as well as music videos for Radiohead, the Chemical Brothers, Björk, Daft Punk, and others. Gondry co-directed the “Model Village” video with his brother Olivier Gondry. Check out the visual (made in collaboration with WePresent) below.

Michel Gondry explained to WePresent:

Olivier [Gondry] and I were excited to work on this because we use completely opposite techniques. I work with a primitive system of cutting paper and moving it under the lens frame by frame. Olivier then transforms it by morphing, warping and CGI.... Basically, in the first part we try to illustrate the lyrics as close as possible, to create the world, and then in the second half.... they go to the moon.

“Model Village” is taken from IDLES’ forthcoming album Ultra Mono, the follow-up to their 2018 sophomore album Joy as an Act of Resistance. The new album arrives September 25 via Partisan.
