Michael vehemently denied those charges and said he loved his wife Kathleen. However, as soon as the trial commenced, it became evident that Michael was indeed responsible for his wife’s death. The jury concluded the trial by finding Michael Peterson guilty of murdering Kathleen Peterson. He received the punishment of life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Case against Michael Peterson, explained

On December 20, 2001, authorities indicted Michael Peterson for the murder of his wife, Kathleen Turner. He surrendered to the authorities, and they took him into custody. At the time, Michael asserted that Kathleen was his wife, and he wouldn’t even consider doing anything to her.

The trial started, and the prosecution presented a toxicology report indicating the presence of alcohol and Valium in Kathleen’s urine at the time of her death. Furthermore, an autopsy revealed that she suffered numerous injuries and purportedly succumbed to consistent blows from a blunt object. However, the case became more intriguing when it was revealed that Michael Peterson identified as bisexual. The prosecution highlighted that Kathleen knew about his bisexuality and desired to get a divorce. But, Michael insisted that Kathleen was aware of his bisexuality and had accepted his extramarital affairs.

During the trial, the prosecution also presented a male escort who testified that Michael Peterson paid him for sex on multiple occasions. After considering all the arguments in the trial, the jury deliberated for four days and rendered a guilty verdict, and he received life in prison as punishment for his crime.

In 2022, HBO Max released a TV series, titled The Staircase, based on the Michael Peterson murder case, and it is now available for streaming.
