Michael Mann has given a measured, if not encouraging, update on Heat 2, the film adaptation of his 2022 best-selling novel that continues the story from 1995 crime-thriller classic.

In a conversation with Variety ranging from his latest film Ferrari to his remaining working years, Mann shared, “The thing is, I don’t think about mortality. I’m busy. What good would it do me? If I absolutely had to make Heat 2, I wouldn’t have got lost in this beautiful story of [Enzo] Ferrari. And I took two years to write a novel… Fortunately, it became a New York Times No. 1 bestseller. The things I’m into are things that fascinate me and keep me moving forward.”

“Don’t misunderstand, I want to make it,” he added “But if I don’t, I won’t be incomplete.” Elsewhere in the article, it’s suggested that filming Heat 2, “a longtime dream,” will be contingent on the success of the Adam Driver-starring Ferrari, which premieres at the Venice Film Festival on August 31st and makes its theater debut in the US on December 25th.

Mann wrote and directed Heat, which was released in 1995 and starred Robert De Niro and Al Pacino in formidable, mid-career peak performances as career criminal Neil McCauley and his pursuing LAPD detective Vincent Hanna, respectively. The 2022 novel (order here), co-written by Mann and Meg Gardiner, served as both a prequel and sequel by establishing full backstories for its ensemble cast as well as picking up after the original film’s events.

In April 2023, Driver was rumored to take on the role of a younger Neil McCauley as Mann and Warner Bros. were in negotiations to develop the film. In an accompanying video with Variety, Mann confirmed his casting choice (at the 9:52-minute mark), saying, “Adam and I talked about it extensively, from before the strike began, when we were still shooting Ferrari. I wanted him to play the Robert De Niro character.” Watch the clip below.
