The pair will also reunite on-screen for the 1988 film's sequel, 'Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,' which is in theaters Sept. 6

Michael Keaton and Catherine O'Hara had a long-awaited reunion at Sunday's Oscars 2024.

Emerging onstage to Danny Elfman's Beetlejuice theme song, the costars of the 1988 hit film — and its upcoming sequel Beetlejuice Beetlejuice — presented the awards for Best Production Design and Best Makeup and Hairstyling at the 96th Academy Awards.

The reunion of Keaton, 72, and O'Hara, 70, comes nearly four months after Tim Burton confirmed on Instagram that the sequel had wrapped filming. "I just finished shooting Beetlejuice. Thank you to everyone involved," Burton, 65, wrote in a November 2023 post.

The new film features returning stars Keaton, O'Hara and Winona Ryder. Joining the the cast for the seuqel are Jenna Ortega, Monica Bellucci and Justin Theroux.

In January, O'Hara told PEOPLE she was excited to have gotten to share screen time with Keaton in the upcoming sequel.

"I had a little two-person moment with Michael as Beetlejuice. I'd been in the first movie in group scenes with Michael, but in this, I had an actual moment where the two of us just," she explained.

"And it was just so crazy and thrilling, really to just be face-to-face with Beetlejuice. He looks the same. Beetlejuice has aged very well," O'Hara quipped.

Keaton told PEOPLE in February that he and Burton considered working on a follow-up film for years.

"We thought, 'You got to get this right. Otherwise, just don't do it. Let's just go on with our lives and do other things,' " he explained.

"So I was hesitant and cautious, and he was probably equally as hesitant and cautious over all these years," Keaton continued. "Once we arrived, I said, 'Okay, let's just go for it. Let's just see if we can do it, if we can pull this off."

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is in theaters Sept. 6.

The 96th Academy Awards, hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, are currently airing live on ABC from the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, California.
