Michael Jackson’s nephew, Jaafar Jackson, will portray the late King of Pop in an upcoming biopic.

The news was announced by Antoine Fuqua, who was revealed by Deadline earlier this month to be directing a film (tentatively titled Michael) based on the celebrated singer’s life.

“Proud to announce [Jaafar Jackson] as Michael — the motion picture event that explores the journey of the man who became the King of Pop. Coming soon,” Fuqua said on Monday when sharing a Jourdynn Jackson-captured photo of the actor, whose father is Jermaine Jackson, in action.

Simultaneously, Jaafar shared the same photo, complete with a caption of his own expressing gratitude for the opportunity.

“I’m humbled and honored to bring my Uncle Michael’s story to life,” he said. “To all the fans all over the world, I’ll see you soon.”

Deadline said Monday that Fuqua is expected to begin production on Michael deeper into 2023. Presently, he’s wrapping work on the third entry in the Denzel Washington-led Equalizer franchise.

Notably, MJ’s estate is involved with this film, as is Bohemian Rhapsody co-producer Graham King. As Freddie Mercury fans will note, that biopic ultimately led to an Oscar win for star Rami Malek, so it’s safe to say expectations are similarly high heading into the Fuqua-helmed MJ film.

As for the King of Pop status, MJ’s son Prince Jackson told Good Morning Britain last year that his father will “always” hold that title.

“I do feel that my father is the King of Pop, will always be the King of Pop, and it’s not something that you can ever take away,” he said at the time.
