Michael J. Fox remembers Matthew Perry's generosity in support of his Parkinson's foundation

Fox recalls Perry quietly writing "a big fat check" to his Parkinson's research foundation: "We were really early on and trying to find our feet."
Michael J. Fox is remembering the generosity of his late friend and hockey partner Matthew Perry.
At this year's A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Cure Parkinson's Gala, an annual fundraising benefit for the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research, in New York City over the weekend, Fox said Perry made a big donation to his foundation not long after the actor and his Friends costars negotiated their historical sitcom contracts.
"I hope this isn't indiscreet, but when they first made their big sale and were made millionaires for the rest of their lives, he wrote a big fat check to the foundation," Fox told Entertainment Tonight. "We were really early on and trying to find our feet, and it was such a vote of confidence."
"And it wasn't accompanied by any self-aggrandizing or anything," the actor added. "He was just like, 'Take it and do your best.' I loved that."
Fox added that he and Perry, who died Oct. 28 at age 54 from an apparent drowning, were able to spend some time together over the years and played hockey together.
Perry has previously spoken highly about Fox, sharing that as a young actor, he aspired to have the same career as the Back to the Future star. "I was young, I had done a couple of plays in school, and Michael J. Fox was it, man," Perry said in November 2022 while promoting his memoir Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing.
"When I was in ninth grade, Michael J. Fox had just done Back to the Future, and there was smoke coming out of my ears," Perry added. "I was so jealous of this guy. And he had, at the time, the No. 1 TV show and the No. 1 movie at the same time! So he was huge. And I don't know anybody else who's done that."
