Michael Fassbender Takes a Virtual Trip Back in Time in New 'Assassin's Creed' Scene
Even die-hard gamers know that movies based on video games — and especially movies based on video games not starring Milla Jovovich — by and large stink. So it’s to be expected that many fans are awaiting Assassin’s Creed starring Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard with high hopes tempered by more than a bit of wariness. To help soothe those concerns, the holiday movie has debuted a new clip (watch it above), titled “Enter the Animus” (which, it must be said, sounds strangely dirty), that reconfirms the Fox release will stay true to the outlandish premise from the game.

In the scene, Fassbender’s thief is strapped into a giant mecha-armed device. A scientist played by Cotillard informs him (and us) that it will let him see, hear, and feel the experiences of his dead-for-500-years relative. That’s the bonkers means by which Fassbender’s character virtually travels back in time to become a member of a legendary assassin’s guild, which means he gets to put on a stylish hooded robe, sneak around in the dark, run and leap across rooftops, and wield giant blades attached to his wrists.

To say that Assassin’s Creed’s basic conceit is loony is an understatement, and yet director Justin Kurzel’s film’s commitment to it is admirable — and, in the best-case scenario, will lend this period-piece sci-fi action extravaganza the sort of over-the-top craziness it demands. Assassin’s Creed, also starring Jeremy Irons, Brendan Gleeson, Charlotte Rampling, and Michael K. Williams, premieres in theaters on Dec. 21.
