Michael Egan, Bryan Singer’s Accuser, Sentenced to Two Years in Prison for Investment Fraud
Michael Egan — who last year accused Bryan Singer and other industry figures of sexual assault, only to withdraw the claims — was sentenced to two years in prison on Tuesday in connection with a fraudulent investment scheme.
Egan, 33, pleaded guilty earlier this year to charges of conspiracy to commit securities and wire fraud. U.S. District Judge Robert J. Conrad in Charlotte also sentenced Egan to two years supervised release and ordered him to pay more than $300,000 in restitution to his victims.
According to the indictment, Egan promised investors that he would invest their money in various projects, including Halloween and holiday themed attractions, land development, and television shows. But he lied about his background, and used the money to fund his own lifestyle.
According to federal prosecutors, Conrad described Egan’s conduct as “a long-term fraud scheme with numerous acts of deception and fraud.” He also noted the defendant’s “predatory nature of the stealing of money … considering the amount of money, the amount of victims … and the defendant’s cunning on innocent victims.”
Egan filed suit against Singer and other entertainment industry figures in 2014, alleging sexual assault when he was an aspiring actor in his mid- to late- teens. But the litigation fell apart. His attorneys later settled with two other figures who were accused, Garth Ancier and David Neuman, and issued an apology that called the allegations “untrue.”
