Michael Douglas' son Cameron says it's 'difficult' moving on after Kirk Douglas' death

Cameron Douglas is having a "difficult" time processing his grandfather Kirk Douglas' death.

The legendary icon and "Spartacus" star died peacefully at home last week surrounded by his children, grandchildren and his wife of 65 years, Anne Buydens Douglas, according to the actor's longtime publicist, Marcia Newberger.

"Losing him is one of those things that, even when you sort of see it coming — he was 103 — it’s still difficult," Douglas, the son of actor Michael Douglas, wrote in a heartfelt tribute for The Hollywood Reporter.

Douglas,41, remembered his grandfather as the epitome of a family man who always "showed up — for everyone in the family."

"He was always there, always supportive and he believed in me even when maybe I had given up on myself. He made sure I knew that," he wrote, recalling a time when Kirk and Anne showed up to his New York DJing gig early in the morning in the "late ’80s, early ’90s."

Some of Douglas' sweetest memories of his grandfather revolve around Kirk's relationship with his daughter, Vivian, the late actor's 2-year-old great-granddaughter.

"These past couple of years, I moved about 15 minutes away from them and have been spending a lot of time with him, bringing my daughter Vivian over on weekends," Douglas wrote. "Just watching the bond between my daughter and grandfather was extremely special. One of the motivating factors behind bringing my family out to Los Angeles was to spend more time with him. That says a lot about the man that he was in my life."

Douglas continued: "He would light up every time she was around. When she was in the same room, all she wanted to do was either be in his lap or be the focus of his attention. I'll remind her of that when she gets older, showing her that connection through photos. It’s pretty special."

Douglas says he finds comfort in knowing that his grandfather got to witness "the trajectory of my life starting to go in a positive direction" before his death.

"He said to me, not that long ago, 'Cameron, I’m so happy to see that you’re finally functioning.' That’s this kind of credo among the members of our family — to be 'functioning' — and I know that made him proud."

The Douglas family laid Kirk to rest days after his death at the Pierce Brothers Westwood Village Memorial Park and Mortuary in Los Angeles, according to People.com, which ran photographs before the service.

The "Sparticus" stars' three surviving sons, actor Michael, Peter and Joel, were in attendance along with Michael Douglas' wife Catherine Zeta-Jones.

Following the funeral, Douglas wrote on Instagram, "Your legacy lives on through the ages; as will my connection with you."
