Michael revealed that he and the White Lotus actor were dating in the middle of filming 2010’s Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, and they thought about getting married.
“We were driving through Vegas, and we almost just spontaneously took a detour and got married,” Michael said in a Rolling Stone interview that dropped on Friday.
But, hilariously, the actors didn’t plan to remain married for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness, and in health. They had a plan. Michael said they wanted "something where you get a certificate." "I think the idea was to then get a divorce right away, so we could call each other ‘my ex-husband' and ‘my ex-wife' at like, 20."
Even though the couple didn't stay together long enough to pull it off, the Arrested Development alum has nothing but good things to say about Aubrey years later.
"She's always been so committed to everything that she does," Michael said. "It's not surprising to me that she's doing really well. The thing that's surprising to me is how much she's producing and putting together projects. It's amazing. Ingrid Goes West? That was so great."
In 2016, during an episode of the What the Tee? podcast with RuPaul and Michelle Visage, Aubrey was the first to reveal they almost married in Vegas. According to the Parks and Recreation star, she and Michael fell in love during a cross-country road trip and dated for "a year and a half."
"He's a very special — I mean, we love each other. We're still really good friends. He's just a weird little freak, and we speak the same language...He's one of the funniest people I know."
Marriage is out of the question, but the friendship remains. Since then, Aubrey married filmmaker Jeff Baena in 2021, and Michael married Nadine Cera in 2017.
The Hollywood exes will come back together for the highly-anticipated animated Netflix anime series for Scott Pilgrim. Michael and Aubrey will lend their voices for roles along with Chris Evans, Brie Larson, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Kieran Culkin, and Anna Kendrick returning — which is exciting since their careers have majorly blown up since filming the original.
