An argument at a baby shower over the weekend left a Michigan grandmother fatally shot and her longtime friend in police custody, according to multiple news outlets citing the victim’s family.

Police said a woman in her 40s shot another woman in her 50s during an argument at a Detroit home where the baby shower was taking place on Sunday, according to local ABC affiliate WXYZ-TV and CBS News.

The victim was identified by family in a GoFundMe campaign as Phebe Williams.

Relatives told WXYZ-TV that the suspect is Williams’ longtime friend who was not invited to the baby shower but showed up anyway. The two women were reportedly arguing about one of Williams’ sons who was also attending the victim’s niece’s baby shower. The suspect, who has not been identified by police, accused Williams’ son of committing a crime and even reportedly went to the local police station days earlier.

During the argument, Williams’ niece, Shavonda Carter claimed the victim hit her friend before the woman shot her.

"Y'all could have just fought. You didn't have to pull a gun," Carter told WXYZ-TV. "There's kids in the house. It's a lot of people in the house so why would you pull out a gun?"

According to local station WDIV-TV, Detroit Police Captain Donna McCord alleged that after the shooting, “the female fled to our Detroit police 9th Precinct, and the victim’s son followed her to that location and struck her with his vehicle.”

The suspect is being treated at a local hospital and is listed in temporary serious condition, police said, per CBS News.

Police told local media that both the suspect and the victim’s son are in police custody but have not announced any charges.

According to the GoFundMe campaign created by family to offset funeral expenses, Williams leaves behind two sons and three grandchildren.

“She was loved by everyone, and she will always be remembered for her caring and loving kindness to others and her joy to others when she was around,” the fundraiser states.
