MGM Taps Rachel Goldenberg To Helm Musical Adaptation Of ‘Valley Girl’
EXCLUSIVE: Rachel Lee Goldenberg has been attached to direct MGM’s musical adaptation of the 1983 romantic comedy Valley Girl, about a teenage San Fernando Valley girl who begins to question the life she’s always known when she falls in love with a punk rocker from Hollywood. Goldenberg most recently helmed A Deadly Adoption for Lifetime starring Will Ferrell and Kristen Wiig.
The remake of the old Martha Coolidge-directed film that starred and helped launch the career of Nicolas Cage is being produced by Matt Smith from a script by Amy Talkington. The project previously had commercial director Clay Weiner attached.
The original Valley Girl had a great soundtrack with songs from such bands as Modern English, Men At Work and The Payolas. The old MGM, of course, birthed musicals with such films as That’s Entertainment, Seven Brides For Seven Brothers, The Wizard Of Oz, Gigi, Singin’ In The Rain, Meet Me In St. Louis, Anchors Away, Showboat, and Guys And Dolls (to name only a handful). Will be interesting to see if the studio continues the path once again.
Besides her film and television work, Goldenberg also directs and produces content for Funny or Die and helms the video series Lady Time and Snackpocalypse with Chloë Grace Moretz and Michelle Obama; Mary Poppins Quits starring Kristen Bell; and Modern Office starring Christina Hendricks.
She is represented by UTA, Luber Roklin and Jackoway Tyerman.
