Meyers Mocks Trump for Making Midterm Endorsement Speeches All About Him, Like a Best Man’s ‘Drunken Toast’ (Video)

Donald Trump is on the campaign trail for several GOP candidates ahead of the midterm elections in a few weeks. But Seth Meyers can’t help but notice that most of the time, the twice impeached former president isn’t exactly campaigning for them.
“Even though Trump is theoretically supposed to be there to campaign for other candidates, he always, without exception, makes it about himself,” Meyers mocked on Monday night. “He’s like the best man at a wedding who gives a drunken toast about how awesome he is.”
Naturally, Seth broke out his Trump impression to act out exactly how he thought that speech might go, culminating in Trump’s beloved catchphrase, “Lock her up!”
But, using specific examples, the late night host called up footage from campaign stops Trump made in Nevada over the weekend for Joe Lombardo, the GOP gubernatorial candidate. Meyers poked fun at the fact that, following his own remarks, Lombardo could be heard asking Trump if he should stay on stage, to which Trump predictably replied no.
“You thought Donald Trump would share a stage with you?” Meyers mocked amid laughter. “This is a guy who once literally shoved another world leader at a NATO summit to get to the front of the group. I’m shocked Trump didn’t pick Lombardo up over his head and throw him off the stage WWE-style.”
Meyers then turned his mockery back to Lombardo directly, joking that the sheepish way in which he asked Trump to stay on stage was “like an actor asking a table of producers if he can audition a second time.”
Moving on, Meyers pointed to Trump’s next appearances on behalf of GOP candidates, this time in Arizona. But of course, during his endorsement speeches there, Trump opted to talk about the ongoing investigation into the classified documents he took from the White House to Mar-a-Lago.
“Now, any normal person in that situation might stay out of the spotlight, or at the very least, avoid talking about the case in public,” Meyers said. “But Trump, as we all know, is not normal, and during that rally in Arizona, Trump decided just essentially to confess.”
