A young couple had plans to tie the knot in Mexico City this week, but their world was shattered by the devastating 7.1 magnitude earthquake that rocked the nation.

Jorge Daniel Huitzil and Erika Castillo Aparicio tried to reschedule their civil ceremony, which would have been followed by a church service, but they learned they would lose their slot at city hall — and the 1,019 pesos (about $60) they had paid to reserve it, the New York Post reports.

So they did what so many couples before them have done, and made do. They had their wedding ceremony the day it was planned. “We were not expecting the quake, and we were not able to cancel it, so we had our wedding today,” a beaming Huitzil said, with his new wife at his side.

Their apartment building was damaged so severely they couldn’t return, so they celebrated in the emergency shelter with their family and friends, who made cakes for the young couple. There was music, and cries of “Beso! Beso!” which the couple obliged with a brief, shy kiss on the lips.

The church wedding? Still planned, but postponed. “We are still not sure because of our situation,” Castillo told the Post. “But life goes on. If we can, well, we’ll go ahead with it.”
