The past few weeks have been great for music. With new releases from Ariana Grande, Beyoncé and more, the charts truly feel like they are alive again. Among these big releases, one of the most buzzed about has been the alliance between hip-hop superstar producer Metro Boomin and veteran rapper Future on their album “We Don’t Trust You.” It has been a huge success, debuting atop the Billboard 200 with over 250,000 equivalent album units and multiple songs in the top 10 of that week’s Billboard Hot 100, most notably the single “Like That” with Kendrick Lamar at number-one. Future and Metro’s success might translate to some Grammy prizes in 2025 too.

“We Don’t Trust You” is already, arguably, the biggest rap album of the eligibility season. While some records like Nicki Minaj’s “Pink Friday 2,” Doja Cat’s “Scarlet,” and 21 Savage’s “American Dream” have been quite successful, none of them have had as much of a lasting impact as this album could. “Like That” is also showing some strong legs, spending a second week at number-one. That sort of staying power is what differentiates a potential Grammy nominee from a potential winner. And it’s likely that another song from the album also gets wider promotion as a single. “Type Shit,” for instance, was also a huge hit from the record, debuting just behind “Like That” on the Hot 100, and the album is long enough for plenty more singles after that. If Future and Metro can keep up that commercial run, they are sure to be remembered come first-round voting this fall.

But part of their Grammy potential is also based on narrative. While Future has won a few Grammys, Metro hasn’t. Last year many expected him to win something after the success of his album “Heroes and Villains,” but he lost both of his nominations (Best Rap Album and Producer of the Year, Non-Classical). This time, though, he could win not only as payback for his losses, but for showing that “Heroes and Villains” wasn’t a fluke. Metro Boomin, the artist, has proved just as much of a superstar as the rappers who feature on his albums. While it isn’t that common for producer-led albums to win Best Rap Album, producers like Diddy and Ryan Lewis have been able to break through, and Metro is just as accomplished as they were when they won.

But even if the album isn’t a traditional rap voter’s cup of tea, “Like That” surely is. Rap voters love Kendrick Lamar, giving him 15 wins in the field (he also has two more career wins, both for Best Music Video). Already the third most Grammy-awarded rapper ever, he’s clearly still a voters’ favorite on most occasions, and a number-one hit is certainly one of those occasions. In fact, Lamar-featured songs have won Grammys for Best Rap Performance twice, and he’s won that category a whopping six times overall, only losing for his debut era and recently at the 2024 Grammys. But “The Hillbillies,” the song he just lost with, was not even a 10th of a hit that “Like That” is, peaking low on the Hot 100. Plus, “Hillbillies” collaborator Baby Keem is much less of a rap industry darling than Future and Metro Boomin. Lamar features have also beaten massive hits before, like Travis Scott’s “Sicko Mode” and Cardi B’s “Up,” so even if something bigger than “Like That” comes along, it’s gonna be a tough sell against such a powerful combo.

So one way or another, Metro and Future are likely collecting something at the next Grammys. And it’s going to be a glorious moment for both of them. For Future, it would be even more confirmation of his status as a hip-hop GOAT, especially if he breaks his tie for the second most Grammys for Best Rap Performance ever (he’s currently at two, tied with Jay-Z and Kanye West). And for Metro, it’ll be the culmination of years and years of background work as one of the leading innovators in modern hip-hop.
