The New Theme

The theme for 2020 is About Time: Fashion and Duration. This year is part of their 150th anniversary. It is expected that the exhibition will trace the history of fashion from its origins in 1870 to the present. To see some of the celebrities portray the clothes from the 1870s will be a sight to see. We can count on crowd favorites like Rihanna, Kim Kardashian, and Zendaya to hit the theme out of the park. However, more information about the theme is necessary to understand the full concept. So when we see the people on the carpet, we are not confused and bewildering at the looks.

What is the History?

The concept comes from philosopher Henri Bergson who conceived the concept called "la durée" that said time that flows, accumulates, and is indivisible. Basically the show will demonstrate the connection between time and fashion (which is why time comes from the 1870s to the present and the need for such a huge depth of time to really show how fashion has transformed.) however, the filter will come from renown writer Virginia Woolf who will act a ghost narrator. This will be interesting to see as one would not put the two together.

The main point of showing the time is to show the transformative nature of fashion. Fashion has and always borrow from the past and present. The director of the Met, Max Hollein, released a statement saying, “This exhibition will consider the ephemeral nature of fashion, employing flashbacks and fast-forwards to reveal how it can be both linear and cyclical”. It has been 150 years since the Museum’s origins? It feels like it has been in operation forever.

The new co chairs are welcoming surprise.

Exciting New Co-Chairs

The new co-chairs for the 2020 Met Gala are Lin-Manuel Miranda, Emma Stone, Meryl Streep. It is about time Meryl Streep is a co-chair. It seems almost contradictory to not have her as a co chair with her iconic film the Devil Wears Prada. Her role in the film was iconic to this date and depicted the real fashion industry to many people. It is their first real peek into what it means to be in the industry. It is a nice welcome to see it.

Emma Stone and Lin-Manuel Miranda are going to be great addition to the team. With Lin- Manuel Miranda’s expertise in broadway will give a necessary fresh breath of air to the already tight fashion circle. It will be exciting to see what he will bring to the Met Gala.

Emma Stone is known for great looks on the red carpet, but let’s see how this translates for the Gala. It is impossible to point in the direction they will take this concept. All we can do is hope to the best.

It is going to be exciting seeing the people on the red carpet displaying their costumes. Let’s hope everyone actually adheres to the theme. There’s always one person who doesn’t. Met Gala 2020 is shaping to be a great event.
