The Met Gala 2024 Co-Chairs Have Been Announced

Mark your calendars, fashionistas! The Met Gala is less than three months away, and more and more details about fashion's biggest night out are finally being revealed.

Here's everything we know about this year's fashion extravaganza so far.

What is the Met Gala 2024 theme?

This year, the annual event will celebrate the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute's spring exhibition, "Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion." The showcase will feature around 250 rarely seen items from the Costume Institute’s permanent collection, spanning from a 17th century Elizabethan-era bodice, to designs by Elsa Schiaparelli and Christian Dior, to modern pieces by the likes of Phillip Lim and Stella McCartney.

Additionally, the show will center on 15 or so historically significant pieces (including the aforementioned bodice and a Gilded Age silk satin ballgown by the American couturier Charles Frederick Worth) which Andrew Bolton, the institute's curator, explained "are the ‘Sleeping Beauties’ of the title," as they are too fragile to be worn and will be displayed in other ways, including video animation, light projection, soundscaping, AI, CGI, which will be used throughout the exhibit.

Over the years, the Met Gala has become particularly well-known for the dramatic fashion moments that gala attendees walk the red carpet in; all, of course, in the theme of the exhibition. Last year, for the "Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty" exhibit honoring the late German fashion designer, A-listers turned up in everything from vintage Chanel pieces by the designer himself to a fluffy white cat costume in homage to Lagerfeld's beloved pet, Choupette.

All told, the 2024 exhibit will cover approximately 400 years of fashion history—meaning the options for gala-goer's themed outfits are wide open.

When is the Met Gala?

Historically, the Met Gala has taken place on the first Monday in May. That timing was necessarily changed during the heart of the pandemic, but it the event has since returned to its traditional slot, and will remain there this year. The Met Gala red carpet, which serves as an opening and fundraiser for the Costume Institute exhibition, will take place on May 6, 2024.
