'The Messy Truth VR Experience' puts the audience in uncomfortable situations

"The Messy Truth VR Experience" is unique in that it literally puts the viewer in another person's shoes. Using cutting-edge virtual reality, executive producer Van Jones and director Elijah Allan-Blitz are bringing to life real stories, in episodes ranging from witnessing police misconduct to being the target of sexual harassment. For the latter episode, "Captain Marvel" star Brie Larson stepped aboard as a producer and actress. Jones, Allan-Blitz, and Larson recently spoke to Yahoo Entertainment about the project. Jones said that the series is an answer to the question, "Is there some way to use technology not to divide us, but to bring us together?" Larson has long been a voice for social justice causes and this marks her latest effort to shine a light. "I guess somehow I just never really believed that I was just supposed to shut up and act, it didn't make sense to me," she said. "We didn't trick it up ... it was literally just what happened," Jones said, noting that they resisted overdramatizing the real-life situations that inspired the episodes. "The Messy Truth VR Experience" is nominated for an Emmy for "Outstanding Original Interactive Program."
