Meryl Streep says she’d come back for another ‘Mamma Mia’ movie: ‘I’m up for anything’

Here we go again, again?

As part of an oral history of the “Mamma Mia” films published by Vogue this week, Oscar winner Meryl Streep said she’d be happy to return for another “Mamma Mia” film – despite her character having been killed off in the previous installment.

“I’m up for anything. I’ll have to schedule a knee scoping before we film, but if there’s an idea that excites me, I’m totally there,” Streep said. “I told [producer] Judy [Craymer] if she could figure out a way to reincarnate [my character] Donna, I’m into that. Or it could be like in one of those soap operas where Donna comes back and reveals it was really her twin sister that died.”

In “Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again,” Streep’s Donna has died offscreen but does appear briefly in the final act as a ghost.

“I was chastised on social media for killing off Meryl, but I promise I didn’t do it on purpose! She was hesitant about doing another film because she doesn’t typically do sequels,” Craymer said. “But I know she loved coming back to film her scenes for ‘Here We Go Again!’ She felt the love around her and the joy of reuniting with those people, so I think that made her more open to the prospect of a third.”

Of course, whether a third movie actually happens is unclear. The film’s cast is sprawling, busy, and getting older, Craymer said. Along with Streep, other stars in the “Mamma Mia” cinematic universe include Colin Firth, Pierce Brosnan, Stellan Skarsgard, Amanda Seyfried, Dominic Cooper, and Lily James (who played a younger version of the Streep character).

“Nobody is saying no, but nobody is saying yes either,” Seyfried said of the potential for a third movie. “The powers that be probably can’t afford us to be honest. I hate to say it, because would I do ‘Mamma Mia 3’ for free – of course I would – but that’s not the business we’re in. What’s fair is fair, and I feel like a third film is gonna come down to something stupid like whether or not Universal wants to pay the money.”
