Meryl Streep and her husband, Don Gummer, separated more than six years ago, PEOPLE reports.

"Don Gummer and Meryl Streep have been separated for more than six years," a representative for Streep said in a statement to the outlet, "and while they will always care for each other, they have chosen lives apart."

The couple, who tied the knot in 1978, have not been seen together publicly since attending the Oscars in 2018. Despite their separation, Streep has continued to wear her wedding ring the past few years.

The Oscar-winning actress, 74, and sculptor, 76, were first introduced by Streep's brother following the death of Streep's boyfriend at the time, John Cazale, in 1978, per PEOPLE. They were married six months later.

Over the course of their relationship, Streep and Gummer welcomed four children together: Henry, Mamie, Grace, and Louisa.

In a 2002 Vogue interview, Streep revealed that the secret to her and Gummer's marriage was "goodwill and willingness to bend — and to shut up every once in a while."

"There's no road map on how to raise a family: It's always an enormous negotiation," she said. "But I have a holistic need to work and to have huge ties of love in my life. I can't imagine eschewing one for the other."
