Meryl Streep and her husband Don Gummer have been separated for more than six years, a representative for the actor confirmed to Insider.

"Don Gummer and Meryl Streep have been separated for more than six years," the representative said in a statement. "And while they will always care for each other, they have chosen lives apart."

Streep and her sculptor husband have been married since 1978.  During their marriage, they had four children together: Henry, 43, Mamie, 40, Grace, 37, and Louisa, 32.

Their oldest child, Henry Wolfe — who uses his first and middle names — is a musician, while their youngest, Louisa, is best known for her starring role in "The Gilded Age."

Mamie and Grace also both followed their mother into the acting world, with Mamie playing the lead role on the show "Emily Owens, MD." Grace has appeared in hit series such as "The Newsroom" and "Mr. Robot."

According to the biography, "Her Again: Finding Meryl Streep" by Michael Schulman, the Academy Award winner met Gummer through her brother following the death of her boyfriend and "Deer Hunter" costar, John Cazale.

People reported that she moved into his apartment while filming "Kramer vs. Kramer," and they tied the knot six months after their relationship began.

Streep and Gummer made their last public appearance together at the 2018 Academy Awards, where Streep was nominated for best actress for her role in "The Post."

During her acceptance speech at the 2012 ceremony after she won in the same category for her role in "The Iron Lady," Gummer was the first person Streep thanked.

"First, I'm going to thank Don," she said, per Indie Wire. "Because when you thank your husband at the end of the speech they play him out with the music, and I want him to know that everything I value most in our lives, you've given me."
