Meryl Streep and Costars 'Eager' for Third 'Mamma Mia!' Movie: 'I'm Up for Anything'

Pierce Brosnan said, "We'd all do it in a heartbeat"

The Mamma Mia! cast is waiting for the call to return for another sequel.

Meryl Streep, Amanda Seyfried, Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth and more members of the cast and crew spoke to Vogue for an oral history in honor of the 15th anniversary of the 2008 movie musical. (The interviews were conducted prior to the ongoing actors' strike.)

Producer Judy Craymer said there "has to be another one because people want it," but "the trouble is we’re all getting older."

"But," Craymer added, "we couldn’t be in a better place as far as having a cast who are eager to do it."

Seyfried, 37, who played Sophie, told the outlet, "I dare you to show me one person who doesn’t want a third Mamma Mia! "

Though her character Donna was killed off in the 2018 sequel Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, Streep, 74, said "if there’s an idea that excites me, I’m totally there."

"I’m up for anything," the Oscar winner said about a sequel. "... I told Judy if she could figure out a way to reincarnate Donna, I’m into that. Or it could be like in one of those soap operas where Donna comes back and reveals it was really her twin sister that died."

Streep joked, "We may have to call it Grand-Mamma Mia! by the time we make it!"

Dominic Cooper, who played Seyfried's love interest Sky in both movies, said costar Streep was "definitely bummed about not being in much of the second one."

He added, "She understood that was where the story goes, but I remember her saying, “Well, I didn’t wanna be dead.”

Craymer said she was "chastised on social media for killing off Meryl," but, she clarified, "I promise I didn’t do it on purpose."

"She was hesitant about doing another film because she doesn’t typically do sequels," said Craymer. "But I know she loved coming back to film her scenes for Here We Go Again! She felt the love around her and the joy of reuniting with those people, so I think that made her more open to the prospect of a third."

Craymer shared some potential storylines for another sequel, explaining that she "definitely" pictures Mamma Mia! as a trilogy.

"We went back and forth in time with the second one, so now we have the creative license to explore this world further," said Craymer. "We still don’t really know what happened to Lily James’s version of Donna in those middle years. Or what happens to Donna and Sam after the first movie? Will Harry ever settle down?"

"I think we have to bring a certain closure to these characters," the producer added. "All of their odysseys lead them back to the island, because that’s where they all want to be in their older years."

Firth, 63, Brosnan, 70, and Stellan Skarsgård (Harry, Sam and Bill, respectively, in the movies) also expressed interest in reprising their roles.

"I’d be there like a shot for all of the reasons I’ve given about the joys of making the first two films," said Firth. "There just has to be a good enough idea to reunite us. It doesn’t have to be a good idea in any lofty sense, but it just has to be a good enough script to give us another go."

Said Brosnan, "Judy knows where to find me if they wanna have a third go around. I think everybody would feel the same way if she said, 'I have a story, I have the script.' We’d all do it in a heartbeat."

Skarsgård, 72, added, "I doubt any of us would shy away from doing another one. It’s just a matter of finding enough songs to come up with a new story." He also joked, "I will be in an urn by the time there’s a script for Mamma Mia 3, but I will gladly participate as a pile of ashes."
