Mercedes-AMG E63 S claims fastest Nurburgring wagon lap time

Fans of station wagons and high-performance cars, meet your new king, the Mercedes-AMG E63 S. Mercedes claims that the station wagon set a new standard for wagons at the Nürburgring Nordschleife. It managed to hustle around the famed track in 7:45.19.

That time is about a whopping 13 seconds faster than the former record holder, the Seat Leon ST Cupra. Then again, maybe that isn't hugely surprising, since the E63 S has a twin-turbocharged V8 under the hood making 603 horsepower. The smaller Seat had to make do with just about 276 horsepower.

As quick as the Mercedes-AMG E63 S might be, it's still topped by a number of other practical performance machines. Both the Porsche Panamera, the fastest sedan at the 'Ring, and the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio managed to turn laps under 7:40. Even the 306-horsepower Honda Civic Type R bests the big Benz with a 7:43.8. But on the plus side, the E63 S is faster than the fastest SUV at the track, the Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio. The Alfa's best was a 7:51, so chalk up another point in favor of wagons over crossovers and SUVs.
