On the menu: New pop-up, Buffett cheeseburger tribute, game day eats, Mexican fiesta

Though not intentional, this week’s feasts and celebrations share common themes.

For example, there’s a new paella pop-up restaurant in Bonita Springs plus two celebrations in Naples of Hispanic heritage and independence days.

Not the same but close: Parrots and Parrotheads. With the latter, cheeseburgers and music from Jimmy Buffett are on the menu.

Speaking of cheese, there’s a new-ish spot for game-day eats.

We wrap things up with two food fundraisers honoring Hunger Action Month.

Paella Pop Up

Friday and Saturday evenings through September and possibly October, John Colon (Latiknow Hospitality Group encompassing El Basque and Espiritu) and Kristin Naughton Millet, owner of BCN Catering Co. and BCN Paellas, Tapas & Wine Store, co-host a pop-up restaurant with carryout service showcasing a variety of Spanish paellas and tapas from Barcelona and Cataluyna plus wines and sangria. Speaking of Spain

On Sept. 15, Felipe’s "Fiesta Fest" kicks off National Hispanic Heritage Month, which according to the U.S. Census Bureau, honors those who can "trace their roots to Spain, Mexico and the Spanish-speaking nations of Central America, South America and the Caribbean."

On the menu: Face painting, live music, dance demonstrations plus free churros with any entrée. Free and open to the public. The month commemorates independence days for Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua on Sept. 15; Mexico on Sept. 16; and Chile, Sept. 18. Fun fact (again according to the Bureau): the holiday was first enacted under President Lyndon Johnson as Hispanic Heritage Week in 1968. President Ronald Reagan extended the observance to a month in 1988.

Beer & Blue Cocktails for Parrots

To protect the 120 varieties of birds threatened with extinction in Brazil’s Atlantic rainforest, Naples Zoo is partnering with KC’s Parrot 41 Bar and Grill on “Pints for Parrots” Sept. 16 from 3 to 7 p.m. The restaurant will donate $1 for every pint of beer sold and $2 for every custom blue cocktail. Raffles and T-shirts too.

For Parrotheads: Cheeseburgers in Paradise

Later this month, Dorona hosts a "Cheeseburger in Paradise"-themed Jimmy Buffett tribute show with live music by Jason Webb of The Caribbean Chillers from 6 to 8 p.m. Sept. 30. Between the buns is beef from famous purveyor, burger king Pat LaFrieda; $30 scores a cheeseburger and rosemary French fries. Margaritas, tropical drinks and more a la carte.

How to help: Hunger Action Month

Harry Chapin Food Bank, Southwest Florida’s largest hunger relief organization, kicks off its first-ever 24-hour Sort-a-Thon on Sept. 15 at 8 a.m. The event supports Hunger Action Day, held at the Fort Myers distribution center at 3760 Fowler St. Volunteers will inspect, sort and pack food donations for distribution among a variety of the food bank's programs and partner agencies. A $25 donation per person is encouraged; through September, Suncoast Credit Union is matching donations up to $25,000.

By the numbers, Harry Chapin Food Bank distributed $61.5 million worth of food in fiscal year 2022 and supplied 34.7 million pounds of food and other grocery items, including 12 million pounds of fresh produce, equivalent to 29 million meals distributed.

Throughout September, all Fresh Market grocery stores partner with Feeding America for Hunger Action Month, asking guests to round up to the nearest dollar at its stores; 90% of what each store raises goes towards supporting the store’s partner food bank in their community.
