Memphis football releases 2022 schedule. First two games on road, no Cincinnati.

Memphis released its 2022 football schedule Thursday and the Tigers will begin play on the road for the first time in over a decade.

The Tigers, in fact, will play their first two games away from home. They head to Mississippi State on Sept. 3 then to Navy on Sept. 10 to start AAC play. The last time that happened was in 2010 when Memphis opened at Mississippi State and East Carolina.

Memphis' home opener at Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium is Sept. 17 against Arkansas State. It kicks off a stretch of four consecutive home games that includes North Texas (Sept. 24), Temple (Oct. 1) and Houston (Oct. 7).

The Tigers won't have an open week until late October following a pair of road games at ECU (Oct. 15) and Tulane (Oct. 22). The game against ECU will be Memphis' first road trip to Greenville, North Carolina, since 2018.

Memphis also has three home games in November hosting UCF (Nov. 5), Tulsa (Nov. 10) and North Alabama (Nov. 19). The season ends on the road at SMU on No. 26.

Memphis has seven home games and only two non-Saturday games. The Tigers host Houston on a Friday and Tulsa on a Thursday.

The Tigers avoid playing two-time AAC champion Cincinnati in what could be the last season the Bearcats are in the conference. Cincinnati, Houston and UCF are expected to join the Big 12 by 2023.

Memphis' home date against North Texas is also a preview against a future AAC opponent. North Texas is one of six schools that will join the conference to replace the departing three schools.

Memphis finished 6-6 last season, its fewest wins since 2013. The Tigers were also 3-5 in AAC play and failed to win a road conference game for the first time since 2010
