Melissa McCarthy pulls an Andrew Garfield, insists she's not in Thor: Love and Thunder

Much like Andrew Garfield's coy denials about appearing in Spider-Man: No Way Home, Melissa McCarthy is doing her damnedest to pretend like she's not in the upcoming Thor: Love and Thunder.

While appearing on The Tonight Show, McCarthy was asked about a potential cameo in the upcoming Thor: Love and Thunder by host Jimmy Fallon, who shared a paparazzi photo that seems to show her dressed as Hela, who was played by Cate Blanchett in Thor: Ragnarok.

"It looks like you on the set of Thor: Love and Thunder and my question is, is that you? Is this photo real?" he asked.

"You know what that was? That was me going to my cousin Dawn's bridal book party," McCarthy replied. "That's [how] you dress to go to a bridal book party."

"So you cannot confirm nor deny this is... " Fallon continued, pressing a McCarthy, who maintained a straight face. "If that is even me," she retorted. "And if it is, that was at Dawn's house."

The photos of McCarthy have been making the rounds online for some time, with many speculating that she might appear in a stage play re-telling of the events of Ragnarok, similar to what Matt Damon did in that movie, playing an actor playing the character of Loki in an Asgardian production (we know, it's almost as confusing as tracking all the Easter eggs in the MCU).

Feeding these rumors is the fact that McCarthy and her husband Ben Falcone posted a Christmas 2020 Instagram video making a plea to be a part of Thor: Love and Thunder.

"Melissa and I are desperate to be in the film Love and Thunder," Falcone announced, while McCarthy added, "I am not afraid to perform a monologue."

The two continued to joke about their abilities, their willingness to do just about anything on screen, and their love of the MCU. Finally, Falcone concluded, "We could be love and thunder, or thunder and love."

Disney declined to comment on McCarthy's remarks on The Tonight Show.

So, it appears we'll just have to wait and see for ourselves when Thor: Love and Thunder hits theaters on July 8.
