The newest superhero film comes not from Marvel or DC, but from the unlikely onscreen duo of Melissa McCarthy and Octavia Spencer. Written and directed by Ben Falcone, McCarthy's husband, Thunder Force mixes crime-fighting with McCarthy's brand of slapstick comedy.

The cast, which also includes Pom Klementieff and Bobby Cannavale in villainous roles, recently spoke with Yahoo Entertainment.

"I want people to see these two women like ordinary women who are standing up and fighting for the right thing," McCarthy said.

Spencer added that the role is a sort of dream come true for her. "I loved superheroes growing up and I can also say that I also wanted to be a superhero," she said.

- I've been developing a genetic platform that will allow us to give ordinary people super powers. But do me a favor, please, don't touch anything.

KEVIN POLOWY: What can you say about the origins of this one? I mean, did you guys see it like a void in the superhero landscape? Like especially when it came to age or gender, that you could tap into with these characters?

MELISSA MCCARTHY: Certainly, yes. There is certainly a void there. I want people to see these two women, like ordinary women, that are standing up and fighting for the right thing. Selfishly, we literally have just been dying to do something where, like, we would get to spend enough time with Octavia.

And when Ben was like, I'm just going to gear this for you your Octavia. I think you should be super heroes. And he laid out the whole story and I was like, get to writing. Like, I'm in. I'm in, now go write it.

KEVIN POLOWY: Melissa has just become a stunt machine in recent years. I don't know if anything will ever top to her kitchen fight in "Spy", but I mean, she throws down pretty impressively in this one again. Is she's doing things on set that even surprise you?

BEN FALCONE: Melissa discovered she loves being on the wires. So she loved all of it. I couldn't get her off the wires. You know, for the jumping, the dancing, the explosions hitting her, whatever. So she surprised me in how adept she was at the wires.

And honestly, her love for it surprised me. Because a lot of people don't like it. It can be uncomfortable, but she loved it. She was like, put me up again. Bring me up.

POM KLEMENTIEFF: She loves doing stunts and she loves being on the wires and training and all these things.

BOBBY CANNAVALE: Melissa works really hard at her stunts. So I'm super amazed at the things she can do. She can, like, helicopter kick herself up off the ground. I need help running. Like, I-- like, I have-- I don't know what to do with my hands when I run.

So she's far ahead of me in terms of the action stuff and I don't know how underrated she is anymore, to be honest. Because she's gotten to flex those muscles a few times now. So I hope we get to see more of it. I hope we get to see a "Thunder Force 2".

KEVIN POLOWY: Octavia, this definitely feels like some new terrain for you. I mean, how empowering was it for you to play a superhero at this point?

OCTAVIA SPENCER: I loved superhero movies growing up and I can also say that I also wanted to be a superhero. So the fact that, you know, Ben wrote this character for me was a gift. And to work opposite, two people, you know, two of my favorite people on the planet and I think they're both so talented.

Like, Melissa is one of the most versatile actresses in Hollywood. So to get to be in scenes with her and the stuff that you see on camera, but there's stuff that people didn't get to see that I got to experience behind the scenes. We're a superhero movie.

And as producers, every day they gave the superhero of the day award. And it's that type of leadership. And, you know, when your friends are doing things like, that it was just-- it was just one of the best experiences I've ever had as an actress.

KEVIN POLOWY: Pom, you are best known for playing a superhero. Here you are, a villain, an antagonist. Was that a refreshing change of pace for you to get your rogue on? I mean, is it more fun in any way to play the bad guy?

POM KLEMENTIEFF: I mean, it's so different. You have so much fun playing Mantis, of course. But Yeah, that was very liberating to get to play a villain who gets really excited about killing people and gets, you know, thrilled by just chaos around her.

KEVIN POLOWY: June 2018, Donald Trump announces the launch of Space Force. March 2019 Netflix announces the launch of Melissa McCarthy and Ben Falcone's "Thunder Force" coincidence or reaction?

MELISSA MCCARTHY: No connection. No connection to any of the previously mentioned.

KEVIN POLOWY: But you know he is going to see this title and he's going to go, I should have thought of that. I should have thought of Thunder Force.

MELISSA MCCARTHY: He would also say that about peanut butter.
