Melissa Benoist To Star In 'Beautiful: The Carol King Musical' In Broadway Debut

Melissa Benoist, who stars on the CW’s Supergirl, will star beginning next month as the lead of Beautiful: The Carole King Musical, which will mark her Broadway debut. The limited run begins June 7 through August 4.

The current Broadway cast features Chilina Kennedy as Carole King at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre, where it opened in 2014; the musical just became the highest-grossing production ever at the venue. Jessie Mueller originally played King and won the Tony Award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical. Kennedy will return to the role after Benoist’s run.

“We are over the moon to welcome Melissa into the Beautiful family this summer,” producers Paul Blake and Sony/ATV Music Publishing said in a joint statement announcing the casting. “We’ve always loved Melissa’s singing on Glee and, added to that, her great work as Supergirl promises that our audiences are in for a special treat at the Sondheim.”

Benoist played Marley Rose on Fox’s music-filled Glee.

Beautiful is from a book by Douglas McGrath, with Marc Bruni directing and choreography by Josh Prince. The songs were written by Gerry Goffin/Carole King and Barry Mann/Cynthia Weil.
