Melanie Lynskey has found a sweet way to stay connected with her daughter when she's away filming.

The actress, 46, who stars next in The Tattooist of Auschwitz, opens up to PEOPLE in this week’s issue about her relationship with her 5-year-old daughter, whom she shares with husband Jason Ritter, 44. Calling her a "little angel person," Lynskey shares how she keeps her relationship with her daughter strong even when away.

"She loves to write notes and receive notes, like little cards that say, 'I love you so much,' or if she gets upset about something, she'll write out an apology card," Lynskey says. "It says, 'I'm sorry for getting upset that I wasn't allowed a lollipop,' or whatever. So we have stacks and stacks of cards that we've written each other."

Before a recent trip to London, "I cut little heart shapes out and left her little surprise notes, which she found within 24 hours. She went on a mission, she got so excited," the actress continues. "So she's like, 'Where are the rest of my notes?' I'm like, well you found them, you found 12 notes, but one was in her lunchbox and one was under her pillow and stuff like that. So that's her favorite thing."

"So my little one came home from school on Friday and wanted to have a cuddle with mama. As we were cuddling and talking about her day, I noticed she was really warm. After the cuddles, we did a Covid test, and sure enough, she was positive," she began a lengthy caption on Instagram, which accompanied a sweet drawing from her little one.

Later in the caption, Lynskey shared more about her daughter's drawing.

"To explain the picture- I did have a bit of a cry when my test came up positive, and was sitting despondently on the stairs when my daughter handed me this. One page says that she loves me, and the other page says that Dada loves me, and then there’s a mama snail and baby snails (???)," she wrote.

"Anyway. It reminded me of all that is important in my world. I would choose cuddling my feverish little one every time, even if it means missing a night like tonight. 💖💖💖💖💖."

The Tattooist of Auschwitz premieres Thursday, May 2, on Peacock.
