Melania Trump has done her own thing since she and husband Donald Trump left the White House in 2021. She has largely stayed out of the public eye, ensconced behind the walls of Mar-a-Lago, and not pursuing the usual activities of a former first lady. After attending the funeral of Rosalynn Carter a week ago, Melania is making another rare appearance — and it’s with one of her husband’s major enemies.

On Dec. 15, the former first lady will be speaking at an immigrant naturalization ceremony which is a fitting engagement since she is also a naturalized citizen. But, according to CNN, it’s the National Archives and Records Administration, who is hosting the event. Yes, that National Archives, the group that sparked Donald Trump’s classified documents legal case. It’s an eyebrow-raising move, to be honest.

Donald Trump’s drama with the National Archives goes back to March 2021 when they consistently asked him to return the legal papers that he took with him from the White House. He and his lawyers gave back some, but not all, of the presidential records that he was required to turn over — and that led to a Justice Department investigation, an FBI raid, and 40 felony charges. It was revealed that the former president kept highly classified documents all over Mar-a-Lago, including his bathroom and a storage closet near the pool that guests and staff had access to.

Melania would normally be an appropriate choice to make the speech to the 25 people being sworn in as citizens but giving her husband’s ongoing legal woes — it’s a bit uncomfortable. The former first lady’s office gave a statement that didn’t give any hints about the awkward alignment. “As a naturalized citizen herself, Mrs. Trump looks forward to telling her story and being part of this momentous occasion for these new American citizens,” the statement reads. Melania has proven time and again that she’s going to march to the beat of her own drum, and it looks like Donald Trump’s legal issues play no part in her consideration.
