Meghan McCain, Joy Behar spar after Nancy Pelosi turns viral moment into merch

Don’t mess with Nancy Pelosi...or Joy Behar. The panel on “The View” weighed in on a recent viral moment where Speaker Nancy Pelosi responded to a reporter who asked if she hates the president by saying, “Don’t mess with me.” While the panel agreed Pelosi handled the question deftly, Meghan McCain criticized those who have turned the moment into a meme. “My problem is like everything is a meme. Everything is for the Internet. ‘Hashtag she persisted, hashtag don’t mess with Nancy,’” McCain said. “This is very serious. You’re talking about the constitution. You’re talking about impeachment, and for me it reduces it,” she added. McCain specifically objected to the use of the phrase, “Don’t mess with Nancy,” on a line of sweaters being sold on Speaker Pelosi’s site and promoted by her official Twitter account. “It’s very reductive to start selling sweatshirts that say, ‘hashtag don’t mess with Nancy.” Co-host Joy Behar interrupted with a response to McCain’s criticism, comparing it to another now-iconic item of clothing: “You mean like hats that say, ‘Make America Great Again?’” The studio audience erupted in applause, prompting McCain to remind the panel and viewers that she’s not a supporter of President Donald Trump. “You know what? I’m just trying to make a point, and I’ve never worn a MAGA hat. I think you know better than anybody that I would never wear a MAGA hat,” said McCain. “Politics doesn’t have to be a meme and clicktivism,” she added.
