Meghan McCain, the outspoken and often controversial former co-host of ABC’s daytime talk show The View, is no stranger to making headlines. Over the years, her fiery debates and public disagreements with her co-hosts have frequently drawn attention. This time, however, the controversy surrounding McCain isn’t about politics or personal feuds, but rather a societal issue that strikes a chord with many: ageism.

In the past, McCain has been vocal about her stance against ageism. She notably defended then-presidential candidate Joe Biden in 2019 against what she termed “ageist crap,” criticizing his younger rival, Eric Swalwell, for his remarks about passing the torch to a younger generation. At the time, she passionately stated on the talk show, “Did (Biden) have the greatest night he’s ever had debating? No. Did it deserve this level of ageist criticism? Absolutely not.”

McCain’s previous stand against ageism makes her recent comments all the more surprising and controversial. During an appearance on Michael Malice’s Your Welcome podcast, McCain referred to her former “The View” colleagues as “crazy old people,” just days after Ana Navarro accused McCain of using her family name to get the job.

“The thing about The View is that I didn’t know when I signed my contract with ABC that this is forever, that, for the rest of my life, I’m going to be bullied, yelled at, abused, and brought up for years. I haven’t been on that show in years. I’m just trying to live my life,” the conservative pundit explained, referencing Navarro’s not-so-subtle remark on the Dec. 14 show suggesting that former The View panelists had “influence-peddled” their way onto the show. McCain ultimately left the show in 2021 to focus on raising her baby, Liberty.

“I just didn’t know that when I signed to do this show that I have to deal with these crazy old people just yelling about me all of the time,” she continued. “I go whole swaths of time without thinking about them — whole months without thinking about the show or anything. Apparently, I’m just on their minds every day. And it’s pathetic,” she added, per RadarOnline.

This ageist remark has sparked significant backlash, adding fuel to the fire of her already contentious departure from The View earlier this year. The tension between McCain and her former co-hosts, particularly Joy Behar and Whoopi Goldberg, has been well-documented over the years, with several on-air clashes.

This isn’t the first time McCain’s comments on age have been criticized, either. Back in August, when 81-year-old Senator Mitch McConnell froze while in the middle of a public address, McCain noted on Twitter that while she had “respect” for the senator, she ultimately felt that “our country cannot go on like this with people this old in power,” suggesting that the cut-off for public office be 75 years old — 6 years younger than her father, the late Senator John McCain, who was still in office at 81 when he passed, which some netizens felt made her hypocritical.

Only time will tell if the remaining View hosts decide to tear apart their former colleague’s latest remarks — because McCain certainly hasn’t minced words when it comes to talking about her “toxic” experience on the show.
