Meghan McCain gets heated with Joy Behar on 'The View' over democratic socialism: 'You disagree that I'm smart?'

On The View Tuesday, when a conversation about possible Democratic presidential candidates turned to democratic socialism, Meghan McCain quickly got heated and lashed out at fellow co-host, Joy Behar.

While breaking down the political traction Mayor Pete Buttigieg has been getting among the Democratic base, McCain brought up a recent NBC/Wall Street Journal poll suggesting most Americans would be OK with a homosexual president, but that only 25 percent of the country would approve of having a socialist as president.

Behar suggested most Americans don’t realize what socialism really means, prompting a back-and-forth in which McCain asked if Behar was questioning her intelligence.

“You disagree that I’m smart?” McCain asked Behar, before later adding: “We have no more time. It’s just so ridiculous, I miss Whoopi when she’s not here. I’m just trying to explain to you the other side… and why Democratic Socialists could be leading you toward the path of Trump getting re-elected. But instead, I’m told I don’t understand what democratic socialism is. I assure you, Joy, I do.”

After returning from commercial break, talk of the security clearance problem in the Trump administration once again pitted McCain against Behar and the other co-hosts. While trying to refute Behar’s claims that the Obama administration was scandal-free, McCain once again brought the conversation back to the earlier argument.

“I told you I didn’t want to do this this morning because, again, even just pointing out the fact that I don’t think socialism is a winning adage for Democrats is a big issue this morning,” McCain said. “I’m telling you. It is how we got Trump and it’s how you’re going to re-elect him. And when he’s re-elected, which at this point, I think he’s going to be, I hope you’ll listen to the points that I have given you.”

Viewers on Twitter were quick to respond to McCain’s reactions, with many saying that she was acting like a child.

But some viewers agreed with McCain’s points and thought Behar was being unfair towards her.

The View airs weekdays at 11 a.m. on ABC.
