Meghan McCain sparks uproar on Twitter with comment aimed at Joy Behar: ‘Part of your job is to listen to me’

Things got tense between Meghan McCain and Joy Behar on The View Monday, prompting a response from co-host Whoopi Goldberg and many others on social media.

While discussing the exit of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen and the vacancy of the role’s impending impact on immigration, Behar was interrupted by McCain and responded to her by saying, “I listened to you, let me just finish.” That’s when McCain made a laughing noise that stopped Behar mid-sentence.

“Part of your job is to listen to me,” McCain replied, drawing a reaction from the audience. “I’m just saying.”

Goldberg, who was in her usual role as moderator at the table, put a swift end to the confrontation.

“So here’s the deal, here’s what’s not going to happen today,” Goldberg said. “We’re not gonna do this. Everybody gets a conversation piece, everybody gets to say their piece, and we don't need to comment if we don’t like what we’re hearing. Just let folks talk.”

McCain’s actions drew criticism on Twitter, even from people who normally appreciate what she brings to the show.

After Goldberg made her statement, inviting Behar to finish her thought, a calm and collected Behar drew applause from the crowd with her response.

“I forgot what it was now.”

The View airs weekdays at 11 a.m. on ABC.
