While the panel agreed Pelosi handled the question deftly, Meghan McCain criticized those who have turned the moment into a meme.
“My problem is like everything is a meme. Everything is for the Internet. ‘Hashtag she persisted, hashtag don’t mess with Nancy,’” McCain said. “This is very serious. You’re talking about the constitution. You’re talking about impeachment, and for me it reduces it,” she added.
McCain specifically objected to the use of the phrase, “Don’t mess with Nancy,” on a line of sweaters being sold on Speaker Pelosi’s site and promoted by her official Twitter account. “It’s very reductive to start selling sweatshirts that say, ‘hashtag don’t mess with Nancy.”
Co-host Joy Behar interrupted with a response to McCain’s criticism, comparing it to another now-iconic item of clothing: “You mean like hats that say, ‘Make America Great Again?’”
The studio audience erupted in applause, prompting McCain to remind the panel and viewers that she’s not a supporter of President Donald Trump.
“You know what? I’m just trying to make a point, and I’ve never worn a MAGA hat. I think you know better than anybody that I would never wear a MAGA hat,” said McCain. “Politics doesn’t have to be a meme and clicktivism,” she added.
Viewers took to Twitter to weigh in on the debate, with some saying McCain overreacted to Behar’s comment:
Joy gave Megan that Clapback! She tried to downplay what Nancy Pelosi said yesterday, Joy quickly reminded her of her fellow GOP’rs abt that red hat. She walked right into IT! That’s what she gets. Leave well enough alone. @TheView #SheBigMad pic.twitter.com/QJopbf4tG4— That Girl! (@MyTrueRoots) December 6, 2019
Sorry @MeghanMcCain Joy’s point is valid. Not just MAGA hats. There are tshirts and sweats and a bunch of hashtag stuff. You really can’t handle valid counter arguments but you profess to be a measured political analyst. Hardly! “Forget it” *arms crossed *pout— Barbiesarmy (@crockerbarbieg1) December 6, 2019
But others thought McCain had a valid point, and didn’t appreciated Behar interrupting:
Hahah I’m sorry for @MeghanMcCain the left are so woke they Won’t let you make your point .— Audi (@aury91) December 6, 2019
@MeghanMcCain Although I'm a Democrat, you made a significant point, and I am angry that the other women glossed over it. It was insulting for the women to basically ignore your statement about the "Don't Mess with Me" shirts. You are a lady!— Rita Gold (@Reader1818Rita) December 6, 2019
