It seems as though Meghan Markle has always had a strained relationship with her father, Thomas Markle, with the 75-year-old frequently talking badly about his daughter and her choices to the media. But now that the mother-of-one has stepped down from her royal duties and will be losing her royal title along with husband Prince Harry, her father seems more disappointed than ever.

According to an upcoming documentary titled Thomas Markle: My Story, which will air in the UK, Thomas is less than pleased by the couple’s controversial decision to relinquish their titles and feels Meghan, specifically, has taken for granted everything that was offered to her. “With Meghan and Harry separating from the royals, it’s disappointing to me because she actually got every girl’s dream,” he explained. “Every young girl wanted to become a princess and she got that and now she’s tossing that away … it looks like she’s tossing that away for money.”

“Apparently $3 million and a 26-bedroom home isn’t enough for them,” he jabbed, adding that he “doesn’t know” what kind of future they are seeking with this change. “It’s kind of embarrassing to me.”

On Jan. 8, Meghan and Harry made the announcement that they plan to “step back from ‘senior’ members of the royal family and work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen.” While the decision was unexpected, the family has since negotiated a plan for Meghan and Harry’s future. According to BBC, Buckingham Palace’s official statement says that the couple “are required to step back from royal duties, including official military appointments,” and “will no longer receive public funds for royal duties,” however, Prince Charles will still continue to offer private financial support, according to royal correspondent, Omid Scobie.

But while the couple is adamant about carving a new path for themselves and their son, Archie, Thomas is not supportive, and feels they’re “cheapening” the royals by making the choices they’ve made. “When they got married, they took on an obligation, and the obligation is to be part of the royals and to represent the royals. This is, like, one of the greatest, long-living institutions ever,” he said. “They are destroying it, they’re cheapening it, they’re making it shabby. They’re turning it into a Walmart with a crown on it now. It’s something that’s ridiculous. They shouldn’t be doing this.”
